Margin and markup use the same profit but divide it by different numbers, which is why they are easy to mix up:
You buy a product for ₹600 and sell it for ₹800. Profit is ₹200. Your gross margin is 200 ÷ 800 = 25%, while your markup is 200 ÷ 600 = 33.33%. If you want a 40% margin on the same ₹600 cost, the selling price must be 600 ÷ (1 − 0.40) = ₹1,000.
| Gross margin | Equivalent markup |
|---|---|
| 10% | 11.11% |
| 20% | 25% |
| 25% | 33.33% |
| 30% | 42.86% |
| 40% | 66.67% |
| 50% | 100% |
Formula: Markup = Margin ÷ (1 − Margin). A margin can never reach 100%, but markup can go above 100%.
This calculator gives gross margin: selling price minus the direct cost of the product. Net margin also subtracts rent, salaries, shipping, marketplace fees and other expenses, so it is always lower. If you sell on Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho, include platform commission and shipping in your cost to see your real margin. For GST-registered sellers, calculate margin on prices excluding GST — our GST calculator can remove GST from an inclusive price.
Margin is profit as a percentage of revenue. Markup is profit as a percentage of cost. For example, 50% margin = 100% markup.
Profit Margin = (Revenue - Cost) / Revenue × 100. Enter Revenue and Cost to get the margin.
